How to maintain your sex toy: Care and Feeding

When you've finally found the perfect toy you need to keep it running smoothly with proper care and maintenance.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness:

Clean your vibrating friends with a damp, soapy washcloth but take care not to wet the internal components and only store them when they are completely dry. We  recommend spraying down your sex toy with a good Sex Toy Cleaner to keep it smelling good and fight the growth of harmful bacteria.  Non vibrating toys like dildos and plugs are especially easy to clean because they can be completely immersed in hot, soapy water. If you really want to get them spic-and-span then run them through a cycle on the top shelf of your dishwasher.

Sex Toys need a safe place to sleep:

Proper storage means a cool, dry place. Don't leave them in areas where they could be exposed to heat-like windows or your toaster oven. Moisture (your vibrator's greatest enemy) will cause the batteries to corrode a vibrator’s internal components, shortening the life span of the toy.  Take the batteries out when your toy is not in use to extend it's lifespan.

Be gentle.
Use a light touch when loading and unloading your vibrator with batteries. A vibrator's internal components are extremely fragile and can be broken through rough handling.

You don't always have to share.

Not to rain on your parade, but your sex toy can be a potential transmission route for STDs.

If you must share your sex toys with multiple partners, keep them safe and clean by covering them with a latex condom and changing them out every time you switch. It's also safer to use toys made from non-porous materials like Silicone, Glass or Hard Plastic since they can be sterilized. (Soft materials like jelly and Cyberskin cannot.)

Don't fall in lube with the wrong toy:

Are you using a soft toy made from Jelly, Silicone, TPR or Cyberskin? Always use a water-based lubricant.

If you are using a sex toy made from hard plastic, vinyl, latex, glass, metal or wood, you may use a silicone-based lubricant.

Some forms of elastomer (a soft, silicone-like substance) may be used with all forms of lubricants. Check with the manufacturer or the retailer to find out.
